Loud and Proud, but Still a Good Neighbor: Exhaust Tips for Cold Fall Mornings
If you have a performance exhaust, you may have noticed it sounds louder on chilly fall mornings. That's normal. When you start a cold engine, it runs a little faster for the first minute or so to warm itself up. That higher idle, combined with cold, dense air, makes the exhaust noticeably louder than it is on a warm afternoon.
Most of the people we build exhaust systems for love that sound, and so do we. At the same time, nobody wants to be the reason the whole street wakes up at 5:30 in the morning. A few simple habits go a long way.
If you leave early, try to start the vehicle and pull away gently rather than letting it sit and idle in the driveway for several minutes. Modern engines don't need a long warm-up, and easing out of the neighborhood before you get on the gas keeps things calm. Save the fun for the open road, like a drive down the Natchez Trace Parkway on a cool fall afternoon.
If the sound is more than you want for everyday life, there are options that don't mean giving it all up. A resonator, a different muffler style or a valved setup can quiet things down at startup and around town while still letting the exhaust open up when you want it to.
It's also worth knowing that a sudden jump in volume isn't always the muffler doing its job. A leak, a cracked pipe or a muffler rusting through from the inside can all make an exhaust louder over time. If your vehicle sounds louder than it did when it was first built, let us take a look.
